What Is OM?

Odyssey of the Mind is an international, creative problem-solving program for students in Grades K–5. Teams of up to 7 students work together to solve a predefined long-term challenge, which may include built structures, performance, technical design, or storytelling. At competitions, students present their solution and tackle a spontaneous problem on the spot—all without adult assistance šŸš«šŸ› ļø. Teams usually begin meeting in December, working through spring.

Why Odyssey of the Mind?

  • Builds lifelong skills: Students gain confidence, learn teamwork, and develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Confidence and communication: Participants report improved public speaking, idea evaluation, and independent decision-making skills.
  • Awards and success: Beattie teams have earned recognition and awards in PSD competitions and even beyond!

šŸ› ļø How It Works

  • Team Formation: Kindergarten–Grade 5 students form teams of 5–7; coaches supervise logistical aspects only.
  • Preparation: Teams work together—planning, designing, building, rehearsing—for months.
  • Competition: Teams present solutions at regional events; successful teams advance to state or World Finals.
  • Growth through challenges: The spontaneous portion strengthens quick thinking, while long-term work encourages deeper innovation.

šŸ“ˆ The Impact

Research and alumni stories highlight strong gains in creative thinking, resilience, teamwork, and growth mindset. Even students who don’t advance find value in the creative process and the sense of belonging fostered during problem-solving.

šŸ† Beattie’s Achievements

  • Accomplishments: Beattie OM teams consistently earn recognition and awards at PSD-level competitions.
