Multilingual Learners

🌍 Multilingual Learners (MLs) – English Language Instruction at Beattie

At Beattie Elementary, we follow the Targeted and Integrated English Language Development (TIELD) Model, blending 30 minutes of daily, explicit ELD instruction during WIN time with integrated classroom support. This aligned approach strengthens both academic content and English language skills for all multilingual learners.

🔤 What Is the TIELD Model?

  • Targeted (Designated) ELD
During WIN (What I Need) time, MLs receive 30 minutes per day of focused English language instruction—grouped by proficiency—to develop speaking, reading, vocabulary, and writing skills aligned to ELP standards.
  • Integrated ELD
Classroom teachers embed language support throughout the day, scaffolding content with strategies like visuals, collaborative learning, and academic discourse routines.

🧩 Tiered Support Structure

Tier Who Support Offered
Tier 1 – Universal All students Content-area educators scaffold language within lessons
Tier 2 – Targeted MLs during WIN Daily, 30-minute ELD groups focused on language development
Tier 3 – Intensive Individual MLs Additional targeted instruction based on specific language needs

đź’ˇ Why This Matters

  • Protected Instruction Time ensures daily, explicit language support
  • Integrated Classroom Support connects language development to grade-level learning
  • Research-Based Strategies like scaffolding, sentence frames, and academic vocabulary promote deeper English proficiency

📝 How It Works

  • Collaborative Teaching: ML paraprofessionals support students during WIN time, while all teachers receive coaching in ELD strategies
  • Data-Driven Adjustments: Student performance is evaluated continuously; groups are adjusted to meet evolving needs
  • Teacher Incentives: Participating educators receive support and collaboration time as part of our commitment to professional growth

🌱 Goals

  • Empower students to use English confidently in all domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Ensure MLs keep pace with grade-level content while advancing language skills
  • Create an environment where students feel seen, supported, and included in all aspects of school life

Through daily targeted instruction and integrated support, Beattie ensures that every multilingual learner has the tools they need to climb higher—academically, linguistically, and socially.
