Open Classrooms:
The open classroom design became popular in the U.S. in the early 1970s, when Beattie Elementary was built. This design places students in larger classrooms with several teachers, without walls and doors separating the spaces. This allows for movement and collaboration among students and teachers.
Today, Beattie Elementary’s staff, parents, and students embrace the open classroom layout as a positive and unique feature that defines the school and its learning style. This design allows for student movement, team-teaching, and cooperative learning, which are not possible in traditional classrooms. Despite the lack of physical boundaries, each room has clearly defined learning areas, and students remain focused on their activities. The learning environment is calm and focused, with high expectations set each day.
