Co-Teaching & Open Classroom Model

Beattie Elementary was built in the early 1970s during the rise of open classroom design. This layout removes physical walls between learning spaces, allowing for movement, flexibility, and collaboration among students and staff.

Today, Beattie proudly uses a co-teaching model aligned with our Theory of Action:

If the school community is consistent in systems of co-teaching, co-planning and co-learning and committed to relationships, then teachers will explicitly model and teach so that students will take ownership of their learning and be regulated.

In each co-taught learning environment, students benefit from multiple educators working together to support instruction. The open design encourages small group work, team teaching, and a strong sense of community. While there are no walls separating classrooms, each space has clearly defined learning areas. Expectations are high, and students remain calm, focused, and engaged.
